ASL Interpreter
Hello! My name is Perri Burka. I graduated in 2019 from the A. Eugene & Bernice Hoeper ASL and Interpreting Program at CCBC (Community College of Baltimore County). For the past 4 years I have been working as an Interpreter in the DC area, mainly working in education and local government.
I grew up in Gaithersburg, MD and found my love for American Sign Language and the Deaf community during my ASL classes at Wootton High School. I decided to follow my passion and attend Towson University for their Deaf Studies Program. During my time at Towson, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the Deaf community and work with many different organizations. I worked at RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) as their Public Policy and Advocacy Intern and at MSD (Maryland School for the Deaf) as an intern in their Family Support and Resource Center.
In 2017, I graduated from Towson with my Bachelor of Science in Deaf Studies and began taking interpreting classes. I originally started my classes at FCC (Frederick Community College) but quickly found my way to the CCBC interpreting program. CCBC has taught me more than I could have ever imagined about interpreting and I am so thankful that I am able to be a part of this incredible program.
While I was interning at RID and MSD, I developed a strong passion for advocacy and the government. Once I am certified, I hope to work in government or legal interpreting settings. I also have a strong passion for performing arts interpreting.
As of August 2019, I have passed both the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) and Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) written exams. I received a score of level III/III on the VQAS performance exam. I took the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) in July 2021 and received a score of 4.5.
